Picayune Schools Lend Hand After Tornado

Dean Shaw, Superintendent of Picayune Schools, and Walt Esslinger, Picayune Schools Support Services Director, recently brought some donations the district had collected in the wake of the recent tornado. The district brought just over $400 along with a carload of books to help replace the ones damaged at the STEAM Academy library in the storm. Donations were collected by the schools and by New Galilee Baptist Church lead by Rev. Edward Stubbs. Thank you very much to the Picayune schools and community for their support and care.

Students from Hattiesburg High School were named Third place winners in the fall senior division of the Mississippi Stock Market Game (SMG). Student competed against over 200 teams in the Mississippi Stock Market Game as part of Coach Roderick Moore’s Economic class.
The simulation is one of the most effective learning tools available about the free enterprise system for students in grades four through 12. The program enables teams of students to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in the stock market over a 14-week period. Winners are determined on the percentage return above or below S&P 500 growth. The Hattiesburg High team outperformed the S&P by 4.7% and grew their portfolio to $109,287.27 over the 14-week session.
The team will be honored at the Mississippi Council on Economic Education’s Annual Awards Ceremony on May 9, 2017 at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS.

FEB 20 – Now a Regular School Day

CALENDAR UPDATE: February 20 (Presidents Day) is now a Regular School Day for all HPSD schools to make up the day lost because of the tornado.

HHS Forensics Wins 2017 District Debate Championship

Hattiesburg High School Forensics competed at the Magnolia (Mississippi) District Congressional Debate qualifiers at Pascagoula High School this weekend winning the District Championship! Sophomores Kelly Li and Owen Sayre finished 1st and 2nd alternates respectively. HHS only had these two students in the Senate chambers facing much larger groups from other MS schools.

HPSD strings program teacher and conductor, Jorge Ivan Gonzalez, has been appointed to conduct the 2017 Mississippi All-State Orchestra. Mr. Gonzalez will be conducting a group of the best young musicians from the state of Mississippi. This is the second time Mr. Gonzalez has conducted the Mississippi All-State Orchestra and this is a special year since it commemorates Mississippi’s Bicentennial celebration. For this reason, Mr. Gonzalez decided to program a piece by Mississippi’s own William Grant Still, who is considered the “Dean of African-American classical composers.” The event will take place on March 24th and 25th, with a final performance on March 25th at Belhaven University in Jackson.
