HPSD PRE-K INFORMATION MEETINGS

If you have a child that turned (or will turn) 4 between September 2, 2016-September 1, 2017, he/she may be eligible to attend HPSD’s PreK program. If you are interested in hearing more about this great educational opportunity for your child, please make plans to attend one of the following parent meetings to be held at the Family Education Center, 516 Forrest Street:
 
  • Tuesday, April 11th @ 5:30
  • Thursday, April 13th @ 2:00
  • Wednesday, April 19th @ 10:00
  • Thursday, April 20th @ 5:30

  Parents must attend a parent meeting in order to receive a PreK application. No exceptions. Please contact Carrie Hornsby or Nancy McGee at 601-582-5078 if more information is needed.
 
 
 
 

HHS Girls Powerlifting: Strong Showing at Region 3

The Hattiesburg High Girls Powerlifting Team competed in Region 3 Class III competition on February 17th. Six of them won/placed in their respective classifications: Jessika Haynes 1st Place, Jamia McCord 2nd Place, Clerionna Patton 3rd Place, Chiquita Smith 3rd Place, Taytum Terrell 3rd Place, and Reignae Bullock 3rd Place. These lifters advanced to the Class III South State Girls Powerlifting Meet to be held on March 10th.

FORENSICS SHINES AT MADISON CENTRAL MID-STATE INVITATIONAL

Senior Derek Collins led the Tiger assault this past weekend at the Mid-State Forensics Invitational held at Madison Central High School capturing the 1st place Overall Tournament Performer award winning 1st Place in Prose Interpretation, 1st Place in Duo Interpretation with partner Kerrington Anderson, 2nd place in Humorous Interpretation, and 4th place in Dramatic Interpretation.
 
Freshman Faith Fountain won 1st place in Declamation qualifying her to compete for the State Championship in April. Ben Parker won 2nd place in Program of Oral Interpretation.  
 
Hattiesburg High School won two of the four Debate events offered at the tournament. Sophomore Kelly Li won the Congressional Debate Championship and Sophomore Owen Sayre won the Lincoln Douglas Debate Championship.  
 
23 Mississippi public, private, and parochial schools competed at the varsity event.

HHS STUDENTS SELECTED FOR ALL-STATE ORCHESTRA

Mississippi All-State Orchestra, 2017
The highest honor a high school string student can receive in Mississippi is to be accepted into the Mississippi Allstate Orchestra. A panel of judges chooses the top players in the state from taped auditions. This year there are nine HPSD orchestra students who have been accepted to perform in the 2017 All-State Orchestra:
 
    Violin:
  • Jonathan Felix
  • Madison McCullum
  • Yavaniy Garraway
  • Ashley McPherson

 
    Viola:
  • Quinn Sellers
  • Marq Graves
  • Shakera Holmes

 
    Bass:
  • Zavier Allen
  • Elyss Ligon
     
    Special honors include: Jonathan Frelix was chosen from statewide auditions as Assistant Concertmaster of the orchestra, Madason McCullum and Zavier Allen as Assistant Principal 2nd Violin and Assistant Principal Bass.
     
    Mr. Jorge Gonzalez has also been invited to be this year’s Mississippi Allstate Orchestra conductor. Congratulations to all!

The newsletter includes strategies for parents to help students deal with stress related to testing, how to better prepare for tests, and a schedule of district-wide assessments for the year. The newsletter also contains information about the information gathered on some of the tests and how it’s used to help students succeed academically.
