Students from Hattiesburg High School were named Third place winners in the fall senior division of the Mississippi Stock Market Game (SMG). Student competed against over 200 teams in the Mississippi Stock Market Game as part of Coach Roderick Moore’s Economic class.

The simulation is one of the most effective learning tools available about the free enterprise system for students in grades four through 12. The program enables teams of students to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in the stock market over a 14-week period. Winners are determined on the percentage return above or below S&P 500 growth. The Hattiesburg High team outperformed the S&P by 4.7% and grew their portfolio to $109,287.27 over the 14-week session.

GONZALEZ TO CONDUCT ALL-STATE ORCHESTRA

HPSD strings program teacher and conductor, Jorge Ivan Gonzalez, has been appointed to conduct the 2017 Mississippi All-State Orchestra. Mr. Gonzalez will be conducting a group of the best young musicians from the state of Mississippi. This is the second time Mr. Gonzalez has conducted the Mississippi All-State Orchestra and this is a special year since it commemorates Mississippi’s Bicentennial celebration. For this reason, Mr. Gonzalez decided to program a piece by Mississippi’s own William Grant Still, who is considered the “Dean of African-American classical composers.” The event will take place on March 24th and 25th, with a final performance on March 25th at Belhaven University in Jackson.
