HHS & BURGER CHANGING SCHEDULES FOR 2013-14

Posted by JasN Smith on May 16, 2013 at 3:30pm 0 Comments

Starting with the 2013-14 school year in August, Hattiesburg High School and N.R. Burger Middle School will be switching schedules. This means that Hattiesburg High School will start at 8:30a.m. and dismiss at 3:45p.m. N.R. Burger Middle School will begin at 7:30a.m. and dismiss at 2:45p.m. There will be no change to the elementary schools' schedules.

There are many reasons for this schedule change, but there are a few that stand out to the administrators and myself that compel this move. Currently, participation in extracurricular activities meant that students at the middle school often had to miss hours of school due to the earlier start time of middle school events. The high school events generally start later, so this was not a problem for them.

Also, it has been shown that high school age students perform better on a later schedule. While this may not be true of each and every individual student, there is significant data to demonstrate this trend.

I know this situation may create challenges for some of our students and their families, but I want you to know that this decision was not made without careful consideration of all the possible impacts and outcomes. We will do our very best to work with you to find the best resolution for any issues that you may encounter because of the schedule change. We are certain that the benefits will be far outweigh any challenges it may cause.

Sincerely,

James Q. Bacchus

Superintendent
