HPS Alumni Spotlight: Carletta Sanders, JD

Carletta Sanders is a 2011 Hattiesburg High School Graduate. In May of 2022, she graduated from Northern Illinois University College of Law and College of Business, where she jointly completed her Juris Doctor (JD) and MBA. Carletta plans to join a regional firm as a Labor and Employment Associate Attorney upon successful completion of the bar exam.

Carletta is no stranger to hard work. She believes in “taking the stairs” and putting forth the necessary effort to garner desired results. She continues to accept challenges as they come and lives by her pillars of service, impact, and building relationships.

In law school, Carletta remained true to her calling of giving back and being a resource to others. She served as the Vice President of the Student Bar Association, President of the Black Law Student Association, Founding President of the Business Law Society, Vice President of the Gender and Sexualities Alliance, and Editor -In- Chief of the Midwest Journal of Law and Policy, among other positions. 

Because of her efforts, Carletta was recognized with awards and honors: 2020-2021 Embracing Diversity Award, the 2021 Public Interest Advocate Scholarship, and the 2022 Thurgood Marshall Award. 

During her first year of law school, she self-published her first book, “Becoming Esquire: A Law School Survival Guide Series” and created a pre-law society, “The Juris Society” where she has assisted over 300 first-generation aspiring law students preparing to apply to law school. Doing
so was vital to increase the number of minority lawyers globally--especially, first generation.
 
Prior to being accepted into law school, Carletta served in the United States Air Force, where she was a Staff Sergeant. She’s been stationed across the globe including Montana, Texas, South Korea, and Germany. She also completed one tour in the Middle East. She specialized in Logistics/ Transportation, Operations, and OSHA Compliance.

Carletta earned her Bachelor of Science from Park University in Human Resource Management, where she was inducted as a member of Sigma Alpha Pi, the National Leadership of Success Honor Society. As she continues to grow in life, both personally and professionally, Carletta’s number one goal is to be an inspiration and mentor to others as they pursue their dreams zealously. She wants others to see that nothing is impossible with a little grace and a lot of grit to get it done.
