Alumni spotlight Donavan Croom

Donavan Croom graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 2013, where he learned the motto, “Don’t just be, Be the Best!”. Shortly after graduation, Donavan enlisted into “The Few and the Proud,” the United States Marine Corps, beginning his military journey at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

After completing six years of active duty, three tours, and achieving the rank of Corporal, Corporal Croom relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, and joined the Memphis Police Department on July 9, 2018, while continuing his military obligations in the reserves. 

Upon graduating from the Memphis Police Academy, Probationary Officer Croom completed Field Training at the 9th Precinct, Ridgeway Station. Officer Croom has work experience at MPD’s 7th Precinct Airways Station, 8th Precinct Appling Farms Station, Entertainment District, OCU, and DUI. Office Croom has gradually elevated to the rank of Police Officer Grade 3 and joined the Ridgeway Station Task Force. 

Throughout his law enforcement and military career, Donavan has strived to continue the motto of “Don’t just be, Be the Best” and has earned several Officer of the Month awards and commendations for leadership, service, and volunteer work in the community. Officer Croom is certified as a Field Training Officer, Bike Officer, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), Instructor, and Recruiter. Now, with over ten years of military service, he has been recognized and earned the Navy Meritorious Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Ribbon, and several certificates of commendation.

Donavan pursued higher education at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee, earning a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 2022. Donavan will complete his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice in May 2024.
