Hattiesburg High Students “Go Beyond” Through Innovative Apprenticeship Program
Jasmin Baxter

At Hattiesburg Public Schools, we are committed to preparing students for success not just in the classroom, but in life. Through our partnership with the University of Southern Mississippi School of Education, Hattiesburg High School students are doing exactly that through the Going Beyond Apprenticeship Program (GBAP)

This forward-thinking initiative is transforming how our students experience Career and Technical Education (CTE), providing meaningful, hands-on opportunities that connect learning to real-world careers.

Building Skills That Matter

Through the Going Beyond Apprenticeship Program, Hattiesburg High students gain valuable experience in high-demand fields such as Advanced Manufacturing, Esthetician services, Barbering, and Early Childhood Education. These pathways allow students to explore their interests while developing practical, career-ready skills.

Students in the program complete extensive training that includes professional development, service-learning, and hundreds of hours of on-the-job apprenticeship experience. These opportunities not only strengthen technical abilities but also build confidence, responsibility, and leadership.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

What sets this program apart is its real-world impact. Students are not just learning about careers—they are actively participating in them.

From supporting early childhood classrooms to engaging in hands-on technical work, students are applying their knowledge in ways that benefit both their personal growth and the Hattiesburg community. These experiences provide a deeper understanding of career pathways and help students make informed decisions about their futures.

A Partnership for Student Success

Our collaboration with the University of Southern Mississippi ensures that students receive high-quality instruction, mentorship, and support throughout their apprenticeship journey. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to workforce development and creating opportunities for students to thrive beyond graduation.

Through programs like Going Beyond, Hattiesburg Public Schools continues to invest in innovative learning experiences that prepare students for college, careers, and lifelong success.

Preparing Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Workforce

The Going Beyond Apprenticeship Program is more than an educational opportunity—it’s a launchpad. By connecting classroom learning with real-world application, we are empowering Hattiesburg High students to take ownership of their future and step confidently into the workforce.

At Hattiesburg Public Schools, we don’t just prepare students for what’s next; we prepare them for success in College, Life, and the Workforce (CLAW)
